You’ve finally done it! After years of dreaming, planning, and tonnes of hard work, the ups and downs, the struggles and success, you’ve finally reached your goal! You are now a successful business owner! Starting your own business is hard work, but it is also undeniably fulfilling. As an entrepreneur, you get to call the shots. You are in charge of your own destiny! So why does it feel like something is missing?
On the other hand, maybe you’ve worked your way up the ladder. You’ve put in the hours; the blood, sweat, and tears. You’ve toiled and triumphed, made a name for yourself, and finally, you’ve earned a position that will really garner you the respect you desire and deserve, along with a nice paycheque. It seems like the perfect job! Yet, something still isn’t right…
Why, if you have worked so hard, ticked all the boxes, and reached such a notable point in your career, do you still feel that something is lacking? Could it be that you haven’t reached your goal? That you haven’t “made it”? Is the answer simply a case of digging in your heels and working harder? Or is it something else? Is there something… more?
Of course, it’s different for everyone, but the answer is yes! There is something more! That desire, that yearning for fulfillment; that is your soul reaching out towards its purpose. A job is a job is a job, but if it doesn’t make your soul sing, is it really what you want?
When it comes to our careers, many of us feel like our job is what defines us. It is what we do nearly everyday. It is our title. When we meet a new person, quite often, an exchange of job info immediately follows the initial introduction. On a first date, the question “what do you do?” is almost guaranteed. And while we are so much more than a job title, it is understandable why our vocation is such an integral part of our identity.
But do you want to be defined by something that doesn’t truly reflect who you are? There is so much more to you! There are thoughts and feelings and emotions. There is heart and soul. You are an endlessly complex being with hopes and dreams and values that mean so much more than a title.
Perhaps, like me, you are not one to follow the mainstream. Yet, society has stated, for so long, that our occupations are a key marker of identity. It’s an interesting line to walk, as we do not want to be placed in a box, but it is undeniable that the projects we put a majority of our time and effort into play a part in defining us. Where is the balance? What is the answer?
As you might suspect, there is no one answer. That being said, I do have a suggestion! This has worked for me and allowed me to thrive in my career, without sacrificing my values or my dreams.
Why not design a career that reflects your inner-self?
You have the ability to shape your future and create the life you want to live. Discovering your purpose, what you are really meant to do, is a huge part of that. And once you truly understand your soul purpose, everything else falls into place; the career, the success, the life well-lived!
You have the opportunity to get so much more out of your work than a paycheque. And when you are doing work that truly reflects your intentions, your purpose, and most importantly, your soul, have the ability to give so much more of yourself to a career that truly shows who you are.
So how does one carve a career path that aligns with their soul-purpose? There are three big steps you can take to get on a path towards a fulfilled future.
What is your vision? What mark do you want to leave on the world? Do you even know? In short, yes you do! Innately, your true self (ie. your soul) knows exactly what you need to create your ideal future. However, our conscious minds can’t always see things on a soul-level. We are so stuck in our ways and used to the habits and routines that have gotten us to where we are now, that a different perspective may seem absolutely alien! Why follow a new path, when the path we are taking is just fine?
Because, it is simply that… just fine. Read it again! JUST FINE. Our hearts want more than “fine”. At our core, we want to feel fulfilled. We want to feel joy in our work. We want to be engaged and excited about what we do on a daily basis. Yes, paycheques are nice, and sunny holidays are always a treat, but these things do not give your soul the satisfaction of living your best life. Actually living that life is the only thing that will produce that feeling.
The first step is realigning. Look inside yourself and see what it is that makes you you. There are many ways to look within, but some of my preferred techniques include mediation, mindfulness, and grounding exercises. Sitting with yourself and tackling the big questions can lead to self-enlightenment. And in turn? Inspired action to create your dream life!
Ask yourself: Who am I? Who am I, really? What are my values? My intentions? How do I want to impact the world?
Look at the person you used to be. How have you changed? Look at the person you are now. What aspects of yourself are driven by your heart and soul? And of course, look to the future. What unique gifts can you, and only you, offer the world?
Meditate on these things. In your stillness, you may find answers, or you may find more questions. This is not a bad thing! Questions mean your soul is curious. You are engaging with a deeper level of being; one that will guide you on the path to discovering your purpose.
Perhaps you know yourself quite well. You’ve already done the work, already looked inside yourself. You have taken the time to understand your intentions, set goals, and make plans to boost your career. The plans have been put in motion and you are success!
But is this really what you want? Maybe it was five months ago. Maybe it was five years ago. But if you find yourself questioning why something feels off, then trust yourself! Intuition is powerful.
Consider how your current situation makes you feel. How do you want it to make you feel? I don’t just mean “happy”. Of course happiness is a desirable outcome, but what does that actually look like? Envision yourself living that happiness. What are you doing, and why? What emotions are present? Ask yourself what you really want. Is it a sense of fulfilment? The ability to help others? The pride in knowing that the work you produce is true to who you are?
By diving deep into your core and asking yourself the big questions, you may be able to find invaluable answers. It allows you to know yourself better and really understand your intentions and dreams.
Ask yourself: what kind of person do I need to be to reach my goal? What steps must I take in order to be that person? Through the power of vision and manifestation, you can uncover your purpose and design the life you are meant to live. The key is knowing what actions to take to get there, and understanding the why behind them.
Having looked within yourself, you are certain to have found more answers. Yet, again, you may also find yourself with a whole new set of questions. That is part of the process. Once we understand what it is that we need, we can move forward and discover how to manifest that vision into reality.
Realigning is all about centring yourself and preparing your mind, body, and soul for taking that next step towards fulfilment. Reconsidering is about acknowledging limiting beliefs and uncovering the truth that lies deep within you. Restarting, well, that is all about action! Once you know what you want and how to get it, it’s time to set your plans in motion. Of course, that in itself involves work.
What!? I have to work, in order to work? Sounds like a raw deal!
But it’s not! The work you put into yourself benefits every aspect of your being and allows you to live your truth. The work involves small steps but makes a big impact on your life.
Changing your habits is key. Our daily routine plays a huge part in our behaviour and how we interact with the world, as does our own self-talk. But these actions, words, and behaviours, the ones that we repeat time and again, have led us down our current path. They have led us into stagnation. And if we don’t break these cycles, how can we expect to change?
Think again of the person you need to be to reach your goals. What are they like? How do they work? How do they live their everyday? Seriously consider the actions this person must take in order to live their ideal life. Do they wake up early? Keep a calendar? Practice mindfulness? Meditate? Go deeper. How does this person look at the world? How do they speak to themselves? What do they believe in?
By considering the deeper meaning behind your own habits and actions, and comparing and contrasting them to those of your ideal self, you can easily find clarity on what behaviours need to change. And while making these changes can be difficult at first, the results are worth it. Slowly but surely, these changes will become habit. These habits will become routine. And soon, thanks to these inspired actions, the life you’ve dreamed of will no longer be a dream, but reality.
The Way Forward
You don’t have to change all at once! Things takes time. Everyone goes at their own pace. And the fact that you are even considering a change shows that you are ready to do the work.
You have already taken the first step. Now is the time to find clarity and discover who you really are. The result? A career that will more than just a money-making endeavour. Instead, your career becomes an extension of you true self, representing your ideals, values, and, of course, your soul.
Remember: Your soul has a purpose! You have a purpose. Finding it may seem arduous, but your innate self knows. You have the power to cultivate your dreams and live the life you were meant to live, in your career and beyond!
Ready To Start?
Something can be a positive in your life, yet run it’s course. Whether it is a job, a relationship, or a hairstyle, when your intuition tells you it no longer serves you, listen! We often hold on to things because they are familiar or make us feel secure, without realising that they are weighing us down. But once we ground ourselves and reevaluate our own trajectory, we become more aware of our values and our purpose, and are able to make the changes necessary to be fulfilled.
Throughout my own life, I have had the opportunity to grow and evolve, both as a person and in my career. I have gone through the process myself; realigning, reconsidering, and restarting. I have found abundant joy as a life coach, working with clients one-on-one and building community with group workshops. Helping others find their purpose is my own soul-purpose. That is why I am so excited to announce my own next big step, as I look to guide inspiring soulpreneurs along the path of self-discovery!
